About Face Makeup & Hair

Should I book in to do a trial for my hair and makeup before the wedding day and when should I do this?
A trial is a good way to know if a look you have in mind will work for you and if your stylist/artist can achieve this. This is also a good opportunity to discuss if any aftercare or ‘homework’ is required to prepare your skin and hair to it’s best potential for the day. Growing your fringe, having some highlights put in your hair, considering a skin routine, experiencing a micro-dermabrasion or having your eye brows professionally shaped and tinted etc. However, I understand Byron is a destination for most Brides. Sometimes a trial isn’t possible or desired. In this situation I call my brides to have a consultation over the phone. Following this I request certain imagery to support my questions and research.

What style of hair and makeup do you specialise in?
I am well known for my natural makeup looks. I believe if a bride has freckles let them show! Hair wise, unstructured, ro-ganic (romantic/organic). Lately i’m loving part up-styles with relaxed curls.

How much time should be allocated to each person getting their hair & makeup done?
1 hour for makeup, 45mins – 1 hour for hair depending on the style desired, your hair texture and it’s length.

What time should we expect to start hair & make-up? How long before the ceremony should I be ready?
Ready at least one hour before the ceremony if you are getting ready on location. If you require to travel to the ceremony – ready 1 hour before you depart. From this time frame I work backwards to create a start time specific for you and your bridal party depending wether makeup only or hair and makeup is required.

How much time should we ask our photographer to be onsite for to capture ‘getting ready’ photos?
I have found over the past 15 years specialising in weddings one hour ready time before you depart for your ceremony is usually ample for photographers and videographers. On the odd occasion I have been asked to have the bride and bridal party ready 2 hours beforehand. I always ask my brides to verify my timelines with their photographer as you may have something unique planned with yours before your ceremony which may require an earlier start than planned.

Byron Bay Wedding Hair Co.

Should I book in to do a trial for my hair and makeup before the wedding day and when should I do this?
We recommend having a trial before the big day but this is not compulsory.
If you are unsure of the hair and makeup style you want or if you have not had your hair or makeup done in a particular style before then a trial can really help you to decide on the exact look you want on your day. We recommend having a trial in the 3-4 month period leading up to your wedding. Some brides opt to have their trial the week of the wedding.
We love pictures, so feel free to show us the ones you like. This is the best way to communicate the exact look you are going for.

Choosing hairstyles similar in colour and length to your own hair will work best. When choosing makeup looks that you like, make sure you choose similar skin tone, eye colour, hair colour and face shape.

What style of hair and makeup do you specialise in?
Byron Bay Wedding Hair Co specialises in natural, dreamy, boho braids, textured hair, beach waves, Hollywood waves and natural glowy, sun kissed skin. We want to accentuate your natural beauty using only the best, cruelty free hair and skin products.

How much time should be allocated to each person getting their hair & makeup done?
We like to allow 45 mins to 1 hour per person.

Stories by Ash

What time should we expect to start hair & make-up? How long before the ceremony should I be ready?
The start time usually is between 7am and 9am depending on the ceremony time. We like to finish 1.5 hours before the ceremony, this allows enough time for touch ups, getting dressed and photographs.

How much time should we ask our photographer to be onsite for to capture ‘getting ready’ photos?
We recommend that the photographer come when we are almost finished and we can always do some pretend touch ups if need be. This way hair and makeup is almost done and you will be looking your absolute best for getting ready shots.

Marley Hammond Makeup & Hair

Should I book in to do a trial for my hair and makeup before the wedding day and when should I do this?
We always recommend having a trial if you have time, however a lot of our Byron brides don’t live close enough to do so. In this case we always recommend collecting inspiration pics or sharing your inspiration boards!

What style of hair and makeup do you specialise in?
My most common request is to “make me look like a better version of myself” – and this is what I have mastered. Natural and flawless!

How much time should be allocated to each person getting their hair & makeup done?
At Marley Hammond Makeup & Hair we like to allow 1 hour for hair and 1 hour for makeup. Depending on styles though, it’s usually only about 45mins each.

What time should we expect to start hair & make-up? How long before the ceremony should I be ready?
We always recommend to finish hair and makeup 1.5 hours before your ceremony. You need time to chill, have a drink, eat, get dressed and take a few pics! Nobody likes to rush these final moments.

How much time should we ask our photographer to be onsite for to capture ‘getting ready’ photos?
I personally think you only need to capture the last moments of the bride getting her hair and makeup done – which can be done as a mock style pic when hair and makeup is actually finished!

Petula Jade Hair Stylist

Should I book in to do a trial for my hair and makeup before the wedding day and when should I do this?
Petula Jade highly recommends a hair trial before your special day. This enables us to meet and discuss your ideas of what dream style your envisioning. In helping you to develop your own vision and style, a trial is a great opportunity for us to consider your personality, your dress and overall theme of your wedding to ensure we create that perfect style. However, a trial is not compulsory and can communicate your style through inspirational pictures and email. We recommend having a trial 2-3 months before leading up to your wedding day.

What style of hair and makeup do you specialise in?
We love creating glam waves, relaxed boho buns and romantic styles we have nurtured throughout our creative years.

What time should I allocate to each person to start hair and makeup? How long before the ceremony?
We personally like to allocate 1 hour per person, even though some styles might take less time, this ensures that the day runs smoothly and we are not rushed in those final moments. We suggest for brides to be ready 1-1.5 hours prior to ceremony, this time before allows enough time to put on that dream dress and to capture all those special moments before walking down the aisle.

How much time should we ask out photographer to be onsite for to capture ‘getting ready’ pics?
We always say 1.5 hours before having to leave. The first 30 mins to capture all the finer details of your dress, shoes and those candid moments of those final hair/makeup touches. The last hour capturing all  those special moments of bride getting dress, champagne toasts with bridesmaids and those tears of joy.

Anita Bauer Hair

Should I book in to do a trial for my hair and makeup before the wedding day and when should I do this?
I find on the wedding day, brides are more relaxed and confident knowing what they will look like, as well as having someone familiar doing her and her bridal parties hair. It’s like having one of your close girlfriends apart of your day! So yes, I do personally recommended having a trial at any stage prior to the wedding date. It’s a great time for us to meet and connect in person (it always feels exciting too!). The trial is also the time when we discuss in detail your dream hair vision and determine the suitability for you, taking into account your dress and own personal style. We have plenty of time together to try up to two styles. We will perfect your overall look to ensure you are 100% happy.

What style of hair and makeup do you specialise in?
My speciality is creating relaxed textured up-styles, soft waves and loose effortless styles. Low textured buns are a popular look and I love creating them to suit the brides own unique style! Half-up half-down styes are also fantastic for brides that love to wear their hair down, but would like to keep some hair secured out of the way with pretty detail. I am open to creating looks from inspiration images, and I do ensure that they are suitable for the brides hair type, face shape and overall aesthetic of her day.

You will feel confident and at ease (super excited too!) throughout the journey from the first moment of contact. I value open and prompt communication, being there on hand to answer any questions, give my professional guidance, and make any recommendations. Your wedding day will be one to remember and I’m honoured that I will be there having you look and feel your absolute best.

How much time should be allocated to each person getting their hair & makeup done?
The timing is mindfully allocated to ensure the day runs smoothly and to schedule. I allow 1 hour for the bride, 45 mins for bridesmaids and 30 mins for mums and the flower girls (with time for finishing touches at the end to ensure the bridal party is looking to perfection and ceremony ready).

What time should we expect to start hair & make-up? How long before the ceremony should I be ready?
Each bride can relax in knowing that the bridal party will be ready at least 1 to 1.5 hours prior to the ceremony. This is the perfect time for the arrival of the photographer and allows a relaxed time to enjoy the pre-wedding “getting ready” photos. I find that the hour prior to the ceremony is very special for a bride and her closest girls. It’s the final moments together sharing in the the excitement and anticipation before saying ‘”I do”. The start time will vary depending on how many people in the bridal party. Prior to the day I will have sent the bride a clear time and run schedule for the day.

How much time should we ask our photographer to be onsite for to capture ‘getting ready’ photos?
I love to have the bridal party feeling at ease and confident that they look their best and ready for their pre-wedding photos. I do recommend the photographer to come at least 1.5 hours prior to the ceremony. They can capture the candid moments of the finishing touches of hair and make up, before capturing the “getting ready” photos.

Sulis Lifestyle Salon & Spa

Should I book in to do a trial for my hair and makeup before the wedding day and when should I do this?
We absolutely advise to have a trial before the big day, especially so we have the opportunity to trial a few options. The bride may have an unexpected dress change or perhaps she has never worn an up-style before. Having a trial 2-4 weeks before the wedding ensures that she has this time to explore her options and feel confident and beautiful for her big day.

Fig Tree Wedding Photography

What style of hair and makeup do you specialise in?
As part of Sulis’ family of hair and make-up specialists we have such a diverse range of talents and expertise, which means we are able to match the stylist to the brides desired look. From the more dramatic to romantic styles, to the more effortless and bohemian bride – we believe in natural beauty and love working with plant-derived products. Ultimately, we want the bride to feel her most beautiful and that is what we pride ourselves on, to make those dreams come true.

How much time should be allocated to each person getting their hair & makeup done?
It depends on the bride and her individual needs, but we would normally recommend an hour for hair and an hour for make-up. Of course, we always leave as much time at the end for touch ups too.

Fig Tree Wedding Photography

What time should we expect to start hair & make-up? How long before the ceremony should I be ready?
Depending on the bride’s pre-wedding rituals and other commitments with photographers etc., we always like to be completed an hour to an hour and a half before. This enables enough time for her to get into her dress and to enjoy those special moments before she walks down the aisle.

How much time should we ask our photographer to be onsite for to capture ‘getting ready’ photos?
Again, this really depends on the bride and each wedding party varies in size. However, we always notice how much fun everyone has getting ready for the wedding and those moments are special, so you want to make sure you capture this. We recommend finding a photographer who you feel really comfortable with. If possible, even ask to have a few photos taken before the event so you feel more confident and relaxed on the day.

Alex Ouston Beauty Co.

Should I book in to do a trial for my hair and makeup before the wedding day and when should I do this?
Yes definitely! A trial helps to work out the exact look you’re going for and gives you a great idea on how your skin and hair work with the look you’ve chosen.

What style of hair and makeup do you specialise in?
When working with Alex Ouston Beauty Co. you will be getting beautifully natural, flawless and classic hair and makeup looks. We pride ourselves on working with each of our clients to perfect their individual styles. Bringing out their natural beauty is our main objective as there is nothing more important than feeling like the best version of yourself on your wedding day.

How much time should be allocated to each person getting their hair & makeup done?
We work out our timeline well before your day and it all depends on which styles you’ve chosen. Please feel free to get in touch to discuss timing for your hair and makeup on your day.

What time should we expect to start hair & make-up? How long before the ceremony should I be ready?
Timing is an essential part of keeping your morning calm and fun and we love to bring both of those aspects to your day. With this in mind we work in a team so we aren’t starting super early. Our hair and makeup start time will depend on your ceremony time so once that’s locked in we are able to give you a hair and makeup commencement time. We love to be done by 1-1.5 hours prior to the ceremony.

How much time should we ask our photographer to be onsite for to capture ‘getting ready’ photos?
An hour and a half is perfect.

Lady Bella Hair & Makeup

Should I book in to do a trial for my hair and makeup before the wedding day and when should I do this?
We highly recommend having a trial. It will ensure your wedding morning is effortless. 80% of our brides are travelling into the area. It’s very common to have a trial the week of their wedding. Lady Bella opened a new studio 5 mins from the Gold Coast airport for destination brides! We spend 2 hrs trialling different looks and photographing them in our professional studio. This ensures you love your look in natural light and on a professional camera.

Lady Bella Photography

What style of hair and makeup do you specialise in?
Lady Bella specialises in a natural bridal look. Most of our brides are between 25 – 40 years old and want a tasteful look that translates in person and on camera.

How much time should be allocated to each person getting their hair & makeup done?
We work as a team and are known for our precision and efficiency. It is a common concern. Every team has a different level of experience and their timings will differ. My advice is trust your teams advice – they know their limits. Lady Bella has worked weddings, runways and shoots around the world for 10 years. This experience is essential for wedding mornings. We work closely with our brides with a detailed timeline, expectations and a checklist for your bridal party to ensure it runs smoothly.

Lady Bella Photography

What time should we expect to start hair & make-up? How long before the ceremony should I be ready?
We generally start at 8.30am – 9.00am and finish 1.5 – 2 hrs before your ceremony. It’s a long day and no one wants a 5.00 am call time! We aim to have the bride and bridal party ready 1.5 hrs before the ceremony. This allows time for everyone to get dressed, photography and travel to the ceremony. The only issue we ever have is Bridesmaids taking forever to get dressed 🙂

How much time should we ask our photographer to be onsite for to capture ‘getting ready’ photos?
If you are getting ready “onsite” I would recommend 1.5 hrs before. If you have to travel through Byron Bay I would recommend 2 hrs before your ceremony. We service all bridesmaids first and then the bride. While they are getting ready for the professional photographer we work on mothers, grandmothers and flower girls. Every wedding morning is different and we will customise this accordingly to the brides needs and wants.
