Real Wedding // Katrina & Josh’s byronviewfarm wedding

Katrina & Josh’s byronviewfarm winter wedding was a breathtaking experience for all involved. June turned on an incredibly beautiful sunny day. Most of byronviewfarm’s ceremony set-ups use the backdrop of the ocean, so it was a very special experience to have their moment positioned facing west with the hinterland view and the sun setting, framing them in golden natural sunlight. An intimate reception on the cottage’s wrap-around verandah was the perfect way to round off their magical day. Thank you to Shane Shepherd for capturing this beautiful love story.

Tell us your story, how did you both meet?
Josh: We both vaguely knew each other in high school through mutual friends, but officially met on Katrina’s 18th birthday at GPO (a nightclub in Brisbane).
Katrina: Josh bought me a birthday shot and the rest was history! Nothing says romance like a night club right? He was the best 18th birthday present I could’ve got!
How did the proposal happen?
Katrina: We were running late to a breakfast with friends so I asked Josh to get my rings out of the jewellery box in the bedroom. When he didn’t reappear out of the room, I went in and he was on one knee. He said to me, “I couldn’t find the rings you were asking for but I did find one for you to wear for the rest of your life. Will you marry me?”
Between the tears and shaking I obviously said yes. Everything about that moment was perfect, just the two of us sharing one of the most significant moments of our lives together!
What were the reasons for choosing byronviewfarm as the venue for your special day?
We were very fortunate when it came to selecting our wedding venue. We’re both from Brisbane, but neither of us wanted to be married here. We are both drawn to the ocean. Josh was searching Byron Bay Weddings and byronviewfarm popped up. It was our first and only venue we looked at. We both knew straight away we would get married there; a perfect mix between native trees and the sea. Everything about byronviewfarm felt homely and right.
What style were you striving for with your table settings, florals and reception? Was there a certain look or vibe that you wanted to create?
When it came to styling we never really had a theme, we both wanted everything to fall into place organically and that’s exactly what happened. The florals were native flowers, which followed through to the table settings and eucalyptus foliage above the tables (an amazing smell under the verandah). Table settings were left very simple, as the flowers that Estelle, The French Petal, arranged were a statement in themselves. While we organised the items, the styling on the day was 100% arranged by our wedding coordinator and done perfectly!
Were there any vendors that you particularly loved working with and why?
All of our vendors were absolutely amazing, but our top three must go to Estelle (The French Petal) our florist, she was unbelievable. Nothing was an issue for her, I gave her a rough idea of what we wanted and she executed it perfectly. When she delivered our bouquets she even came into the cottage, gave me a kiss and congratulated us!
Our photographer Shane Shepherd was also a highlight of the day. We were never keen on the run of the mill wedding photos. We much prefer candid photos, which followed Shane’s ethos. Our photos were filled with authentic laughs and intimate moments, I still get goosebumps looking at them. Shane felt more like a guest at our wedding than the photographer, he was a dream!
…and finally, McGee entertainment were so flexible and accomodating. Jason learnt all the songs we requested (at no extra cost!) and really set the mood for the day.
What were your favourite parts of the planning process with Byron Bay Weddings?
Planning with Byron Bay Weddings was an all round great experience. Responses were prompt and detailed. We felt like the team had a really great idea of what we wanted on the day. If we couldn’t find something, Byron Bay Weddings would point us in the right direction, or get a quote themselves and pass it on. They even organised an after party for our guests in Byron Bay. So in answer to the question, I guess my favourite part of planning with BBW was the trust we had in your team, making our dream day perfect. We never had to worry!
Overall, what was your most favourite part of your wedding day and why?
Aside from getting to marry each other, highlight for the day was being surrounded by people who loved us the most. The beauty of having a smaller wedding meant we could have an intimate reception on the verandah, where we could easily talk to all of our guests! Special mention has to go to the sunset that day as well, it was spectacular!
