Carly Tia’s photography journey began 5 years ago with capturing day-to-day moments. Her curiosity flourished – she began to study the art and after shooting her first wedding, she realised there was nothing she would rather be doing. Forever inspired by Byron Bays beautiful surroundings Carly Tia creates images that are honest and reflect the people in them. Carly Tia has a documentary/fine art style, opting to capture the day as it unfolds naturally; Carly Tia photographs real moments and all of the carefully curated details of your wedding day.
Tell us a little about yourself?
I live in Brunswick heads with my partner, Levi, who draws and paints a lot. I’m lucky enough to have him also working from home as an illustrator, so we get to spend most of our days together. I am 5 years into this photography journey and loving every minute. After spending so many years in hospitality I wasn’t sure what I liked doing anymore, so I bought a camera and started capturing day-to-day moments. My curiosity piqued and I wanted to learn more. I studied photography and found something that I really enjoyed doing. After shooting my first wedding I realised that there was no other job I would rather do.
Describe your wedding photography style?
I try to make pictures that capture the real stuff. Down to earth, honest, and (I hope) beautiful.
What do you love about shooting weddings?
Weddings are awesome! You’re surrounded by people who are genuinely stoked! I love the
spontaneous nature of it all – where it takes you, who you meet. I also love photographing all of the different aspects of a wedding that build a story – the details, the people, the landscapes, and all the little things.
What do you enjoy about living and working in the Byron Bay region?
It has such a relaxed atmosphere and the surrounding landscapes are stunning!
A tip or two for couples who are looking for their perfect wedding photographer?
Falling in love with the photos is a great start, but it can be hard to identify what it is you are looking for; every photographer has their subtle differences in style, mood, and editing. I think it’s always best to go with the feeling you are left with after flicking through some of their portfolio. Follow your heart!
The best thank you that you’ve ever received?
Each and every thank you I’ve received is the best. It’s so good to hear from my couples after the wedding, and to know that they are loving their photos. However, one comes to mind: I had sent a couple their photos and put together a blog post about their day. Shortly after, I received an email from a relative of the groom, who was unable to attend the wedding. She said how thankful she was for the photos, and the pictures had made her feel as if she were really there. I couldn’t believe how much this meant to me!
Best advice you’ve ever received about being an artist.
Work hard! And keep going.
What has shooting weddings taught you about love and marriage?
It’s an incredible thing to be given the opportunity to capture such an intimate event in a couple’s life. It has taught me that every story is unique, and there are no rules!
Lastly whats your favourite image that you’ve taken?
There are favourites from every wedding, but right now, I love this shot of Kirilee & Daniel.
