Tell me about Luke Going Photography

I am a photographer who specializes in fine art wedding photography. I say ‘Fine Art’ because I strive to make each frame an original, producing a photograph that is beautiful enough to be hung on a wall. My ambition is to provide couples with a unique portfolio of powerful images that not only documents the proceedings of their wedding day, but in most effect, illuminates the fervent affection that radiates from a couple during such a significant celebration of their love.

How would you describe your style?

Creative, elegant and evocative. I like to draw out the natural beauty in the people and the environment that I photograph.

How many weddings do you average per year?

I have only just entered the wedding world in the past12 months, but I am hoping to average between 20 – 30 a year. I have 12 weddings booked for the next year, so I am half way to my target : )

Your company specialises in wedding photography. What is it like to capture such special moments for others?

Having been married myself, I realise how emotionally charged a day it is. Never will you have all your most cherished people in the one place at the one time. And that in itself is an overwhelming experience! But the moments that I truly love to capture are the subtle glimpses a couple sneaks to one another. The moment when they are able to block out all that is happening around them and create an intimate sphere of reflection where they grasp the immensity of their love for each other. This moment melts my heart every time and fortifies my faith in the betrothal of two souls.

Why choose to specialise in wedding photography?

The Grandeur. The Romance. The Beauty. The Joy. The Festivity. The Emotion. Where else could a diehard romantic satiate his sensual and visual appetite?

Do you have an assistant/2nd shooter that accompanies you on wedding assignments?

No, I shoot alone. But if a couple requests that I have a second shooter, then I know a handful of brilliant photographers who would be happy to assist.

Can you describe how and when you use flash, video light, reflectors and natural light during a wedding?

There is no better light then natural light (in my opinion). Its ability to transform an inanimate object into a visual masterpiece is one of nature’s greatest gifts. Photography is ALL about light and I like to work with what is available rather then manufacture the scene with artificial light. There is a time and a place for flash, and I prefer to work with the natural light where it is available. Flash is definitely necessary for the dancing shots at the end of the night though.

What is your favourite recent image you have shot recently? Can you describe it’s creation in regards to location, lighting, composition, camera settings etc, also your thoughts when creating the image and what it means to you?

My most favourite shot is not that recent, but it is one that I have used a lot to promote my business. It is the first image in the gallery of the bride and groom embracing under the tree with some curious spectators in the background. This is one of those “Magical” shots. There is no other way to describe it. These shots are the exemplar of what every photographer strives (and prays) to create. It is possible to recreate these types of images, but often it feels like they have been presented to you by the grace of some unforseen presence. This photograph came by chance as I had not intended to use this location originally. But as it happened, I found the light, then the backdrop, and plonked the couple in the centre of it all. And voila, there you have it! But… there is more to this image then just good lighting and interesting scenery. The real ‘magic’ is illuminated by the way he has chivalrously swept her up in his arms and embraced her with such fervent delicacy, allowing the light to capture the look on her face as she surrenders to her dreamy feelings of being cherished and adored. This presents an archetype of the way men and woman express their love to each other, with the man sweeping her off her feet like the exquisite vulnerable flower that she is. An ancient stereotype, that lies at the heart of all romantic tales.

Describe your typical day at work. 

Dreaming, creating, sharing, stretching, writing, stretching some more, exploring, meeting, eating, smiling, reading, thinking, devising, visualising, capturing, dreaming some more and reflecting on how grateful I am that this is what I call ‘work’.
