Wedding Photographer Interview

Tell me about Jacqui Judd photography?

I’ve had my photography business now for 10 years. It’s funny, as a child I grew up with photography & art all around me, my dad was a professional photographer & my mum an artist. We had dad’s darkroom in the house (which as kids we would play around developing photos), mum’s art studio upstairs (where we would often find ourselves creating artworks) and also a big photographic studio in town. It must have rubbed off on me because out of the blue I decided to start my own business and haven’t looked back.

I love creating images that could replace paintings on the wall. I’m getting ready to launch “Women In Nature” , a style focusing on women of all age, shape & size and photographing them in beautiful nature scenes.

How would you describe your style?

Natural, Creative, Artistic, Relaxed, Spontaneous & FUN FUN FUN

How many weddings do you average per year?

In the wedding season I average 4 weddings/month.

Your company specializes in wedding photography. What is it like to capture such special moments for others?

I always feel so honoured to be part of a couples wedding day. You really get to experience the behind the scenes of a wedding day... it can sometimes get quite intense with family dynamics....I’m very easy going by nature so if need be I can calm most situations down & get everyone feeling relaxed..... I have decided to always carry a bottle of rescue remedy with me, just incase it’s needed by anyone :)

Why choose to specialize in wedding photography?

I love fairytale themes & also fashion, so weddings are perfect for me as it’s like a combination of both. The bride is always looking like she has come out of some fairytale or fashion magazine and I get to take her & her partner to amazing places for their location shoot. It’s so much fun creating beautiful images for wedding couples, I love it!

Do you have an assistant/2nd shooter that accompanies you on wedding assignments?

I pretty much shoot weddings on my own. I’m running around all over the place getting all angles, and I work with 2 cameras so I feel I cover everything. An extra photographer is always available if requested.

Can you describe how and when you use flash, video light, reflectors and natural light during a wedding?

I’m such a huge fan of natural light ... the glow and natural warmth of the late afternoon sun is so beautiful....but of course a reflector, flash or video light will be used if need be.

What would be your dream wedding?

My dream wedding would be a Fairy Tale or Fantasy themed wedding where everyone comes in elaborate outfits creating an amazing atmosphere full of colour & fun. It would be set in a rainforest, beach setting or some amazing location with a waterfall. I would be in photography heaven!!!

What is your favourite recent image you have shot recently? Can you describe it’s creation in regards to location, lighting, composition, camera settings etc, also your thoughts when creating the image and what it means to you?

I have a new favourite image every time I shoot a wedding. This one I just took the other day at a wedding where it rained all day. I had such huge plans for the location shoot but we had to change everything due to the rain. I brought my chaise lounge which instead of taking down to the windy wet beach we put in some bushes nearby. I was a little bit nervous about the vintage lounge getting wet or mud stains, my camera gear was getting really wet, and we had not much daylight to work with. We had umbrellas over the bridal couple and then taking them away when I was about to take the picture. The thing I especially like about this picture is that when you look at it, you would have no idea of the conditions we were in and the memory of taking this photo makes me laugh.

Tell me about a unique, funny, or interesting experience you have had while photographing a wedding.

I remember this wedding I did a few years ago when the dust storms hit. I got some amazing images that day with the brown sky. I was a bit worried about my camera gear at first but what can you do except just go for it. It’s like with any storm, you just got to get out amongst it - that’s when you get the best photos.

Describe your typical day at work.

I will always arrive early so I can relax and ease into the wedding day and take another look around. I always check ceremony & location spots out a few days earlier to see how the light is shining and to choose the scenes for the location shoot. Once I start clicking the camera at the brides preparation I don’t stop until I leave the reception. It’s all go go go, I have fun but also keep very focused. I will always try and get the bridal couples online viewing gallery up within 24 hours after their wedding so they can share their photos with family & friends who are still visiting.

What do you love the most about your job?

I get to share one of the most special days of a couples life and make new friends at the same time. I get to go to beautiful locations and creatively capture it all. This has to be one of the best jobs ever!
